Your Server

Yesterday I had the pleasure of working a 10 hour shift at my restaurant. The pattern for the day coasters, drinks, napkins, food, check. I did this for 20 different tables which is at least 50 different people. Towards the end of the night I started thinking to myself why do people not tip well? Is is because they don't have the money, don't know how hard we servers are working just for a couple dollars, or are they just mean!! I decided to go with people know little about servers except that they serve and you give them a couple extra dollars. Well here's some knowledge for you. 1. Servers make $3.46 an hour. That's right! No we don't make minimum wage plus tips we make $3.46. Why this number? Well its not extra money if that was what you were thinking its to pay our taxes with. Most servers never even see that money so what does this mean. Your server depends on you, to eat, have housing, to be clothed, ect. 2. Servers have to tip out. The money that you give your server is not just for the server! I know what your thinking when the bill comes. "I'm going to give this nice girl 2 dollars she was so sweet". Well you actually just gave me maybe one dollar if I'm lucky. Servers have to give a percentage of there money to the host at the front door as well as the bartenders and If there is a bus boy a percentage goes to them as well! Yesterday I had to give 30 dollars in tips to the staff. This is something I do not think many people think about when they are at a restaurant but they should! 3. What your server does. Your server does not just tell the kitchen what food you want. When you go to a restaurant more likely than not a server rolled your silverware, made sure your table was clean, folded your extra napkins, made sure your food was exactly how your ordered it (even the most specific details), swept the floors after and before you, got you all the extra sauce you needed, carried all you plates away when you finished with you appetizers, meal, and dessert, plus more. Maybe your saying that's not much but remember that your servers is doing this for you as well as four other tables around you. These are just three points that I think people do not consider when they go out to eat and it's important you do. Your server is your employee and depends on you and works hard for you. Please tip generously.

  1. I knew that servers didn't get paid well, but thats crazy. I really don't know how you do it because I would be going insane dealing with belligerent customers and basically doing it for free. Hats off to you because that is hard.!

    1. Yes it is. Especially when people don't know much about all of what your server does and has to do and yes the customers get crazy.
